VE-Day
Summerland Cenotaph
Located in downtown Summerland in Memorial Park, our cenotpah honours the fallen of both World Wars and Korea.
The names of the servicemen and women who paid the ultimate price are listed on the north side facing town. When the population of Summerland was about than 1600 in 1914, the 36 men and one female nurse named on the cenotaph perished in Europe. Several others are not named, the reasons for this remain unclear.
In the Second World War, 24 did not return from a population of less than 2000.
Update July 2022
Legion appoints a committee to reveiw the names and disposition of the Cenotaph to be prepared for the District's intention of moving the Cenotaph near a new entrance facing Harvey Aveenue.
All names already on the Cenotaph will remain for historical record other than changes to misspelt names.
